The sustainable wardrobe: a beginner's guide

The most sustainable garment is the one already in circulation. Building a wardrobe from resale finds isn't just better for the planet — it's better for your wallet and your style. Here's how to start.

Why sustainable fashion matters

The fashion industry produces 10% of global carbon emissions and is the second-largest consumer of water. Every second-hand purchase displaces a new one. If everyone bought just one second-hand item instead of new this year, it would save 449 million lbs of waste — the equivalent of half a million tons of CO₂.

But sustainability isn't just about the environment. It's about owning fewer, better things. A curated wardrobe of 30 pieces you love and wear regularly beats a closet of 200 pieces you never touch.

Step 1: Audit what you already own

Before buying anything, go through your current wardrobe. Pull out everything you haven't worn in the last 12 months. Sort into three piles:

  • Sell — items in good condition that no longer fit your style or size
  • Donate — items that won't sell but are still wearable
  • Keep — items you wear regularly or that have sentimental value

List the "sell" pile on Driply. You'll fund your new wardrobe with the proceeds.

Step 2: Define your capsule

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile pieces that all work together. The classic formula is 30 items: tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes. The goal isn't to own exactly 30 things — it's to own pieces that mix and match effortlessly.

Start with a colour palette. Choose 2–3 neutrals (black, white, navy, olive, beige) and 1–2 accent colours. Every piece you buy should work with at least 3 other items in your wardrobe.

Step 3: Build the foundation

These are the pieces to look for first on Driply:

Tops: A white button-down, a quality t-shirt (2–3), a knit jumper Bottoms: Well-fitting jeans, tailored trousers, versatile shorts Outerwear: A denim or leather jacket, a waterproof shell Shoes: Clean white trainers, a smart-casual shoe

Look for quality brands that hold up over time — COS, Arket, Uniqlo, Levi's, Patagonia, and Carhartt are all excellent resale finds.

Step 4: Buy with intention

Before purchasing on Driply, ask yourself:

  • Does this work with at least 3 items I already own?
  • Will I wear this at least 30 times?
  • Is the condition good enough to last?

If the answer to all three is yes, buy it. If not, pass — there will always be another listing.

Step 5: Care for what you own

Sustainable fashion isn't just about buying second-hand — it's about making things last. Wash less (most clothes don't need washing after every wear), air dry instead of tumble drying, and learn basic repairs. A £2 needle and thread can add years to a garment's life.

The result

A sustainable wardrobe is one you actually wear. Every piece has a purpose, fits your style, and was chosen deliberately. It takes time to build — but the result is a wardrobe that's better for the planet, easier to manage, and genuinely yours.
